Coinbase Clears Path to Derivatives Dominance with CFTC Approval
Coinbase has secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to operate its own derivatives clearinghouse, completing a set of three federal registrations. This allows Coinbase to run a futures business end-to-end without renting any part of it.
The company already held the other two pieces: Coinbase Derivatives, LLC as a designated contract market, and Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. as a futures commission merchant. The approval for Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization marks a significant milestone in Coinbase's expansion into the derivatives market.
With its own clearinghouse, Coinbase can now create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly, which it expects to mean faster product development and fewer dependencies when launching new products. This is also seen as a major advantage for the company, as it will allow it to offer perpetual futures on stocks like Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia.
Coinbase has stated that its clearinghouse will use USDC as collateral and settle 24 hours a day, which it describes as 'purpose-built for the always-on markets of the future.' This is in contrast to traditional clearinghouses, which run on cash and Treasuries and settle on a banking calendar.
