Coinbase Clears Path to Expanded Derivatives Offerings with CFTC Approval
Coinbase Global Inc., the cryptocurrency exchange and financial services company, has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate a derivatives clearing organization. This marks an important step in Coinbase's efforts to build a fully integrated U.S. derivatives platform.
The approval allows Coinbase Clearing LLC to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps. Key features of the platform include native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement capabilities.
By controlling clearing alongside execution and brokerage, Coinbase can reduce its dependence on third-party infrastructure, simplify operations, and potentially accelerate the introduction of new regulated products. This is particularly important as derivatives account for a larger share of crypto trading activity.
Coinbase's expansion into derivatives is part of its broader ambition to become an 'everything exchange', offering a range of financial services beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading. The company will continue to rely on existing partners for certain offerings, including margined derivatives and single-stock perpetuals.
