Coinbase Files Proposal for Single-Stock Perpetual Futures in US
Coinbase has filed a proposal to list single-stock perpetual futures in the US, a move that could bring new traders to its platform.
The exchange announced the news on social media platform X, saying it wants to provide liquid, 24/5 exposure to individual stocks for the first time. This builds on its existing live US perps market.
Coinbase has filed a proposed rule change with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under Section 19(b)(7) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, which is also pending approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The SEC notice was published on September 18, 2026.
A single-stock perpetual future is a derivative contract that tracks the price of a specific stock. This model is already used in cryptocurrency markets, but Coinbase's move would bring it to individual US stocks for the first time. For example, traders could buy a perpetual futures contract tied to Tesla's (TSLA) share price without actually owning TSLA shares.
The proposal warns that trading futures carries substantial risk and investors should decide whether it suits them. The stock price of Coinbase (COIN) surged 11.66% to $194.25 after the news, but one strong session does not make a trend.
