Coinbase has launched 'Coinbase for Agents', a platform that enables artificial intelligence (AI) agents to handle financial tasks, including trading, borrowing, and lending, without human intervention.

The platform is built on top of Coinbase's AgentKit framework, which was developed in 2024. It allows AI agents to interact with blockchain-based financial systems through natural language processing.

Coinbase for Agents started rolling out between June 11 and June 16, 2026, initially offering crypto and derivatives trading capabilities for AI agents, followed by equities, ETFs, and prediction markets in September. The platform supports x402, a micropayment protocol that enables microtransactions between machines without routing through traditional payment rails.

The x402 protocol has already processed over 180 million payments. Coinbase also launched an SEC-registered AI advisor called Coinbase Advisor alongside the initial launch, which puts guardrails around the advisory functionality.
