Coinbase Names Rob Witoff as New CTO Amid AI-Driven Restructuring
Coinbase has appointed Rob Witoff as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO), marking a strategic move to accelerate the company's AI transformation. Witoff, who first joined Coinbase in 2014 as an infrastructure engineer, has played a crucial role in the company's growth and success.
As CTO, Witoff will lead the firm's technical evolution, building on his previous experience as director of infrastructure and security, chief architect, and founder of Unit 410, a security firm acquired by Coinbase. His return to Coinbase in December 2024 aimed to strengthen systems engineering and prepare the infrastructure for new scales of usage.
The appointment comes amid an internal transformation process within the company's organizational structure, which saw the reduction of approximately 700 jobs, representing nearly 14% of its global workforce, as part of a restructuring plan in May 2026. This measure aimed to flatten management layers and reorganize teams around artificial intelligence-assisted development.
