Coinbase Premium Index Hits Record Low, Suggesting Weak Institutional Demand
The Coinbase Premium Index has been in negative territory for an unprecedented 86 consecutive days, from May 19 to August 12, 2026. This streak surpasses the previous record of 40 negative days registered between January and February of the same year.
The index measures the percentage difference between the price of Bitcoin on Coinbase and the reference price on global exchanges, with Binance being the most commonly used comparator. A positive reading indicates that Bitcoin trades at a premium on Coinbase; a negative reading indicates that it trades at a discount.
Markus Thielen, head of research at 10x Research, noted that the persistent discount suggests selling pressure from U.S. institutions continues to outweigh buying demand. This interpretation is consistent with the analysis of Darkfost, an analyst at CryptoQuant, who indicated that professional demand remains largely absent and that institutions are selling more than retail participants.
