Coinbase Prepares for Post-Quantum Era with Adaptive Custody Safeguards
Coinbase is developing post-quantum custody safeguards to support various signature schemes. The company's Head of Cryptography, Yehuda Lindell, emphasized that these measures are designed to be adaptable and prepared for any potential direction Bitcoin and other digital assets may take.
Traditional Multi-Party Computation (MPC) relies on split keys, but post-quantum signature schemes may not be 'MPC-friendly'. This is because some schemes lack the underlying arithmetic structure required for key-splitting. Researchers are actively exploring solutions to this issue.
Coinbase is also researching a fallback architecture that combines post-quantum threshold decryption with programmable Hardware Security Modules (HSMs). This setup would store private keys encrypted with post-quantum cryptography, which could be assembled within the confines of an HSM in physically secure environments.
Lindell stated that Coinbase's custody architecture will be agnostic and adaptable to whatever signing scheme Bitcoin adopts. The company is currently refining procedures for handling roughly $250 billion in assets on behalf of institutions such as BlackRock.
