Coinbase Soars 12% on SEC Tokenization Framework
Coinbase stock surged by 11.9% in afternoon trading on Friday after the SEC unveiled a five-year 'Innovation Exemption' that establishes a formal federal pathway for permissioned blockchain venues to list and trade tokenized representations of publicly traded U.S. stocks.
The order, which took effect immediately, exempts qualifying Tokenized Securities Venues from the Exchange Act's definition of an exchange and grants conditional dealer-registration relief to liquidity providers - a structure that plays directly into Coinbase's existing infrastructure and its ambition to become an 'Everything Exchange' spanning spot crypto, derivatives, stablecoins, and now tokenized equities.
The move was accompanied by analyst activity, with Morgan Stanley initiating coverage on Coinbase with an Equal Weight rating but a notably bullish $250 price target. The company is seen as a key access and infrastructure provider as crypto integrates deeper into the regulated financial system, with Goldman Sachs and Needham also raising their price targets into the $200-plus range.
The broader crypto market provided a powerful macro backdrop, with Bitcoin climbing sharply and Ethereum posting strong gains, lifting the entire category of crypto-linked equities. The main U.S. equity indices were nearly flat, confirming that Coinbase's outsized move was driven by company- and sector-specific catalysts rather than general market momentum.
