Coinbase Stock Falls Short of Bitcoin in Crypto Market Rally
Coinbase has long been touted as a stable and convenient way to invest in cryptocurrency, but its performance over the past year reveals a different story.
Over the last 12 months, Coinbase's stock (COIN) has fallen by 51%, while Bitcoin (BTC) has declined by 30%. This significant gap in performance prompts a closer look at the Coinbase stock versus Bitcoin debate.
As of October 2, 2026, Coinbase shares were priced at $183, while Bitcoin was trading at around $86,189. This means that an investor who put $10,000 into each a year ago would now have approximately $4,900 in Coinbase shares and about $7,000 in Bitcoin.
The gap in performance is even more pronounced over the past five years, with Coinbase's shares falling 21% and Bitcoin's value rising by about 67% from its early 2021 price of around $51,500.
