Coinbase Wins CFTC Approval for In-House Crypto Derivatives Clearing

Coinbase Global (NasdaqGS:COIN) has won approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate its own in-house crypto derivatives clearing house, Coinbase Clearing LLC. This move allows the company to clear and settle futures, options on futures, and swaps for its U.S. clients internally.

The CFTC registration will enable Coinbase to reduce its reliance on external clearing firms and support 24/7 settlement using stablecoins such as USDC. This new approval is part of a broader trend in the industry that Simply Wall St has identified.

Coinbase's push to offer derivatives alongside existing spot services fits with its goal of capturing advanced trading through perpetuals and other derivatives, shifting more activity into higher-margin services.
