Smaller Coins Stun Bitcoin in September Rally
In September, Bitcoin experienced a 7% gain while stocks and gold declined. However, several smaller cryptocurrencies outperformed Bitcoin significantly. NEAR surged by 186.6%, and Arbitrum climbed 137.1%. The forces behind this rotation could be either short-lived or signal the start of an altcoin season.
The August inflation report came in lower than expected, causing a brief decline in Treasury yields. This led to investors redirecting funds towards cryptocurrency. Many traders had taken short positions, expecting prices to fall. When prices rose instead, those traders were forced to buy back coins to limit their losses.
Bitcoin's recent rally saw institutional and corporate buyers eager to own the asset. US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $2.4 billion in a five-day period from September 21 to September 25. Strategy, which holds Bitcoin as its primary treasury asset, bought 1,665 BTC for $143 million in late September.
Smaller coins saw significant gains in September, but their returns are largely due to forced buying rather than underlying project strength. NEAR, Arbitrum, and Zcash can swing wildly in both directions, making it difficult to predict their long-term potential.
