CoinEx Shuts Down Amid Market Downturn and Rising Compliance Costs
CoinEx, a nine-year-old crypto exchange, has announced its shutdown due to a prolonged market downturn and increasing compliance costs. The exchange, which launched in 2017, cited shrinking trading volume and liquidity across the industry as reasons for its decision. CoinEx's own reserve ratio sits above 100%, meaning every user asset on the platform is fully backed and withdrawals should go through without a hitch.
The wind-down timeline is aggressive, with new account registrations already stopped and futures trading switched to reduce-only mode. Margin trading, staking, lending, blockchain deposits, spot trading, and CoinEx's Smart Chain network will all shut down by December 22, 2026, at 2am UTC. Any USDT left on the platform after this date will move into independent custody, where CoinEx will charge a 5% monthly fee against it.
The shutdown is seen as a test of how the current cycle sorts winners from also-rans. Unlike previous exchange collapses, which were often marred by scandals or hacks, CoinEx's decision appears to be based solely on financial realities. As the crypto market continues to navigate its downturn, observers will be watching to see if other exchanges follow suit.
