The recent Coldcard hardware wallet breach has led to a significant spike in small Bitcoin transfers, with around $2.5 billion worth of BTC moving on July 31.

This surge is comparable to the aftermath of FTX's collapse in November 2022, when 39,900 BTC were transferred in a day, according to CryptoQuant data.

The breach, which dates back to March 2021, has resulted in three waves of thefts totaling 1,367 BTC across 4,585 addresses, with a fourth wave likely underway. Galaxy Research estimates that if this trend continues, losses could reach around $114 million.

Kraken's chief security officer, Nick Percoco, has called the incident a 'wake-up call' for the hardware wallet industry and is advocating for independent lab validation of entropy sources to prevent similar breaches in the future.
