Collectors Flock to Physical Bitcoin Notes Despite Cryptocurrency's Digital Nature
Bitcoin's lack of physical form has led to a paradoxical trend in collectors becoming fascinated by notes that represent digital BTC. These notes, produced by companies like Polymerbit, have gained traction among collectors despite their counterintuitive nature.
The founder of Polymerbit, Daniele Barbagallo, attributes the growth of this market to his own approach and collaborations with artists. He began exploring physical cryptocurrency notes in 2015 after studying the 'blue ocean' strategy of creating new markets rather than fighting for existing ones. The first hint of greater potential came when more notes were sold than expected in early 2017.
However, it was around 2023 that the market shifted significantly with major auction houses and grading services bringing physical cryptocurrency before traditional collectors. Barbagallo points to his decision to partner with Heritage Auctions as a key turning point in gaining acceptance among numismatic dealers and collectors.
