Community Banks Challenge OCC Over Crypto Charters
A federal regulator's rule allowing national trust bank charters for cryptocurrency and non-traditional companies has sparked controversy, with the Independent Community Bankers of America filing a complaint in US District Court for the District of Columbia.
The group claims that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is improperly issuing national charters to these companies, allowing them to engage in banking activities beyond typical trust bank functions.
The lawsuit argues that Congress did not intend for the national trust charter to be a 'side door' into full-fledged banking services.
