Cosmos (ATOM) Plunges After Neutron Governance Exploit
Cosmos (ATOM) has taken a hit after a recent governance exploit on Neutron, an appchain in the Cosmos ecosystem. The incident occurred around September 23, 2026, when validators halted the chain for about 24.5 hours to contain the attack.
An attacker gained control over Neutron governance and seized admin rights to contracts for Astroport and other protocols, resulting in the theft of approximately 1.73 million ATOM. Fortunately, Cosmos Hub validators were able to intervene and recover a significant portion of the stolen funds, with around 1.23 million ATOM locked in a recovery multisig pending a governance proposal.
The incident has raised concerns about decentralization and governance risk within the Cosmos ecosystem. Some critics have framed the halt and state change as 'playing God' with state, while others see it as proof that Cosmos can coordinate to recover from cross-chain attacks.
