The Cronos network was hit by a massive exploit over the weekend, which led to a halt in the entire chain. The Tectonic Cronos DeFi platform, a decentralized lending protocol built on the Cronos chain, identified an exploit and paused the network in response.

Weilin Li, a researcher, said the attacker exploited TONIC's 20% collateral factor and thin liquidity, pumping the governance token 100-fold in 20 minutes before borrowing against it. This pump-and-borrow style attack has led to estimated losses of around $75 million, with additional attacker-controlled wallets surfacing.

Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek stated that the exchange and app were unaffected by the exploit, easing some contagion fears. The incident comes at a fragile time for CRO, which has been down over 5% in the past week before this news broke.
