Crypto Advocates Defend OCC Charters Against Bankers' Lawsuit
The Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) has defended the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) against a lawsuit filed by the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA). The ICBA challenged the OCC's approval of national trust charters for crypto companies, arguing that these firms were bypassing key banking regulations. CCI CEO Ji Hun Kim called the lawsuit an effort to block financial innovation and competition.
The ICBA's legal action, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, claimed that the OCC had not implemented adequate safeguards or compliance measures for crypto companies seeking bank charters. The ICBA president, Rebeca Romero Rainey, stated that the national trust charter was not intended as a shortcut for crypto firms to gain banking credibility without meeting standard requirements.
Among the approved or conditionally approved applications are those from World Liberty Financial, Circle, Ripple, Fidelity Digital Assets, BitGo, and Paxos. The OCC's approvals, which took place under President Donald Trump, have faced criticism, particularly regarding World Liberty Financial. This company, co-founded by members of the Trump family, has been scrutinized for alleged ties to UAE royal families.
The CCI's support for the OCC's decisions highlights the ongoing debate between fostering innovation in financial services and ensuring regulatory compliance for crypto companies.
