Crypto Clarity Act Stalls as Senate Heads into Summer Recess
The US Senate's five-week summer recess has dealt another blow to the passage of the Crypto Clarity Act, a landmark bill aimed at regulating digital assets in the United States.
The legislation had gained momentum last week with industry players like Coinbase and leading financial institutions such as Fidelity and Goldman Sachs expressing their support. However, it appears that lawmakers have prioritized other matters, leaving the crypto community uncertain about the future of this regulatory framework.
Beneath the surface, three concrete obstacles are holding back the bill: banking lobbying, conflicts of interest surrounding Donald Trump, and ethics concerns. The traditional banking sector is concerned about the yields on stablecoins offered by crypto exchanges, while lawmakers have pointed to revenue generated by the Trump family through meme coins as a reason for their opposition.
In an attempt to break the deadlock, a new draft was introduced in July with strengthened ethics language that would prohibit government officials and their families from issuing or promoting cryptocurrencies. However, if the Senate enters recess without a vote, the matter will be pushed back to September at the earliest, leaving the industry uncertain for another month.
