Crypto Enters Exponential Growth Phase, Hoskinson Warns Predicting Its Pace Is 'Counterintuitive'
Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has predicted that the cryptocurrency market is entering a new era of exponential growth. Speaking at the United Nations, Hoskinson compared the development of blockchain technology to earlier advances in nuclear technology, the internet, and artificial intelligence. He explained that exponential technologies often appear to develop slowly at first but then accelerate rapidly, citing the internet as an example.
Hoskinson pointed out that the internet changed the way people communicate and access information, making global communication almost immediate. He also highlighted the advancements in artificial intelligence, noting that AI models are becoming more efficient and allowing increasingly capable systems to run with fewer computing resources. This, he said, means that advanced AI could become more widely available rather than remaining limited to large data centers.
Hoskinson also discussed the increasing use of blockchain technology to represent traditional assets on-chain, known as tokenization. He mentioned that tokenized equity data showed growth from roughly $600 million at the beginning of 2025 to about $3 billion. This growth comes as financial institutions explore blockchain-based settlement, tokenized assets, and digital forms of money.
Hoskinson warned that predicting the growth of a new technology can be challenging, as seen in the example of renewable energy in Germany, which was once expected to provide no more than 4% of the country's electricity but by 2025 was supplying 55.9%.
