Crypto Exchanges Expand into Traditional Finance

Share

Crypto exchanges have undergone significant transformations in the first half of 2026. They are no longer just platforms for trading digital assets, but comprehensive financial platforms where users can buy cryptocurrency, make payments, invest in stocks, trade tokenized securities, and enter into contracts linked to traditional assets.

The growth of perpetual contracts on traditional instruments has been notable. By the end of July, the total trading volume exceeded $1.6 trillion. This is a significant increase from previous periods, with 62% of tokenized stock trading activity occurring while US exchanges were closed.

Stablecoins are also seeing increased usage beyond just crypto trading. Their total supply stood at $311 billion at the end of the first half of the year, and monthly on-chain transfer volumes exceeded $1 trillion. This volume reached $8.8 trillion over the course of the year.
