Crypto Exchanges Flood Traditional Markets with Perpetual Futures Contracts
Crypto exchanges are rapidly expanding into traditional finance by offering perpetual futures contracts for stocks, precious metals, commodities, and foreign exchange. According to a report from CoinGecko, this trend has been growing throughout 2026, with TradFi perpetual volume exceeding spot RWA trading by more than eight times.
The report found that the monthly TradFi perpetual volume increased 1,472-fold from $230 million between January 2025 and May 2026. This growth is significant, especially when compared to overall crypto-exchange trading volume, which declined 8% quarter on quarter during the same period.
CoinGecko's data also shows that equity-linked perpetuals have grown significantly, with monthly volume rising from $831.17 million in July 2025 to $34 billion in May 2026. However, this still only accounts for less than 1% of trading volume in traditional stock markets.
The adoption of perpetual futures contracts by crypto exchanges is a significant shift in the industry, with major platforms such as Binance and Coinbase expanding their product strategies to include traditional financial assets.
