Crypto Firms' AI Pivot: Armstrong's Opposition Challenged
Recently, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong expressed his opposition to cryptocurrency firms pivoting towards AI infrastructure, claiming it's not a 'zero-sum' game between crypto and AI. However, this argument is challenged by several companies that have successfully transitioned from mining cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) to providing AI infrastructure.
Companies such as Hut 8 (NASDAQ: HUT), IREN (NASDAQ: IREN), and CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) have repurposed their GPUs and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for AI tasks, generating more predictable revenue. Armstrong believes that the growth of the AI market makes crypto more important, as AI agents will need their own financial infrastructure to transact.
Armstrong argues that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are essential for AI agents, which cannot open bank accounts or wait for wire transfers. They require 'real-time programmable money' to provision resources without human intervention. In other words, AI agents will be paying each other rather than people to achieve their goals, and this won't work through traditional banks.
While Armstrong's argument is logical, it doesn't make financial sense for crypto companies to keep mining cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin when they can monetize their GPUs and ASICs for AI tasks. Developer-oriented blockchains like Ethereum (ETH) will continue to expand without dedicated crypto companies.
