Faisa Ali, a 34-year-old from Nottingham, has been sentenced for defrauding investors out of thousands of pounds through her cryptocurrency company. Between 2021 and 2023, Ali promised investors their money was safe, but she ultimately lost all their funds. In March 2023, she admitted to poor decisions in a text message to the investor group, revealing the losses.
Nottinghamshire Police revealed that Ali spent nearly £250,000 on luxury items, including jewellery, travel, home improvements, vehicles, and takeaway food. Bank records showed she splurged £76,140 on jewellery, £40,845 on travel, and £65,183 on home furnishings and improvements. The fraud primarily targeted members of the Somali community across the UK, with 23 victims providing witness statements.
Ali was given a three-year suspended prison sentence and ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work. Detectives noted that she was fully aware of the declining value of cryptocurrencies but continued to use new investors' money to fund her lavish lifestyle. A proceeds of crime hearing is scheduled to determine if Ali will be stripped of any remaining cash and assets.
Detective Constable Simon Jones described Ali as a 'calculating fraudster' who exploited the trust of vulnerable individuals. Many victims had saved for years, only to lose everything. The case highlights the risks of investing in unregulated cryptocurrency schemes.
