Crypto Hacking Incidents Soar to Record Highs in 2026
Crypto hackers have been working at an unprecedented rate in 2026, with DefiLlama tracking 277 incidents by late September. This marks a significant increase from last year's 148 incidents and 2025's losses of $2.715B.
The total losses for 2026 have surpassed $1.84B, with the third quarter being the worst so far, accounting for over $1.25B in losses. The median loss size has been shrinking, indicating a market that has fragmented and is becoming increasingly vulnerable to attacks.
The recent spike in attacks can be attributed to operational mistakes, social engineering, and messy interactions between different protocol components. Security experts point out that audits alone will not suffice, and protocols must pay attention to key management, employee training, internal access controls, and monitoring of cross-chain components.
