Crypto Hacks Plummet to Nine-Year Low as Industry Improves Security Measures

Grayscale's research note published on August 3 reveals that cybersecurity losses in the crypto sector are at their lowest point since 2017. According to Grayscale, the projected losses for 2026 sit at approximately $1.7 billion, which represents about 0.1% of the total crypto market capitalization.

This figure is a stark contrast to previous years, where crypto hacks have been a significant concern. However, Grayscale attributes this decline in cybersecurity losses to concrete improvements across the industry, such as rigorous code audits and bug bounty programs that incentivize white-hat hackers to find vulnerabilities before malicious actors do.

The Coldcard exploit is one notable example of a recent hack, which compromised an estimated 1,367 to 1,400 BTC. At current prices, this translates to roughly $88 to $90 million in losses. Grayscale emphasizes that Bitcoin's underlying blockchain and consensus rules were never touched, and the protocol itself remained completely uncompromised.

The self-custody debate has been gaining momentum, with Grayscale highlighting the growing availability of insured institutional custody solutions, particularly Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) and ETFs. These ETPs and ETFs offer what Grayscale describes as institutional-grade custody featuring insurance coverage, asset segregation, and multisignature security measures.
