Crypto Industry Faces Setbacks, Yet Still Seeks Regulatory Clarity
The recent collapse of the Clarity Act in the Senate marks a significant setback for the crypto industry's efforts to gain regulatory clarity in Washington. The legislation, aimed at reshaping the US financial system for digital assets, was met with bipartisan resistance, partly due to President Donald Trump's entanglements with the crypto world.
Despite this defeat, proponents of the bill remain hopeful that the Trump administration will still provide the industry with much-needed regulatory clarity through rulemakings issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). However, such rules would be subject to reversal by a potential Democratic administration.
Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) believes that the bill will resurface during the lame duck session, with 'an awful lot of work' having gone into it in good faith. Lead crypto advocate Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) has urged the administration to immediately issue rules at the SEC and CFTC to provide stability and certainty.
Meanwhile, a separate crypto tax package is set to face its own pivotal moment on Wednesday in the House, with a significant bipartisan vote expected during a markup. The bill has undergone changes to address Democratic concerns, including the removal of language dictating when staking and mining rewards would be taxed.
