Crypto King Aiden Pleterski accused of spending investor funds on luxury lifestyle
The trial of self-described 'Crypto King' Aiden Pleterski began in Ontario Superior Court on Tuesday, with prosecutors alleging he misused millions of dollars from investors to fund his lavish lifestyle. The 27-year-old is charged with fraud over $5,000 and money laundering, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor Scott Patterson claimed Pleterski spent investor money on exotic cars, private jet flights, and credit card bills running into the millions, rather than investing it in cryptocurrency and foreign exchange as he had promised.
Two investors testified about their experiences with Pleterski. Luciano Valerio, a realtor, invested $150,000 through Pleterski's company, AP Private Equity Limited, after being assured his money would be protected. Valerio told the court he never received any of his investment back, which strained his relationship with his wife. Another investor, Olesya Chornenka, invested $72,300 and later suspected a scam when she couldn't recover her funds.
The Crown plans to call about 15 witnesses, including other investors, a forensic accountant, and a police officer. Patterson alleged Pleterski's only income before soliciting investments was the COVID-19 benefit, and that he used investor funds to finance a lavish lifestyle. Pleterski, who is representing himself, disputed some of the claims during cross-examination, including whether Valerio had a copy of his investment contract.
Pleterski was arrested in May 2024 after a joint investigation by Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Securities Commission. The trial is expected to continue on Wednesday.
