Crypto Market Concentration: Billion-Dollar Tokens Plummet

Share

The number of billion-dollar crypto tokens has been steadily declining over the past year, according to data from CryptoRank. The decline marks a shift in how digital asset value is distributed, with fewer individual tokens capturing enough liquidity and investor demand to cross the $1 billion threshold.

In November 2021, the number of tokens with market capitalizations above $1 billion peaked at 107 assets. However, after the collapse of FTX, the number fell sharply to 37 tokens in December 2022. Although crypto markets recovered afterward, the number of billion-dollar tokens has not returned to previous highs.

The decline comes as the number of token launches continues to grow, spreading liquidity across a wider range of assets. As more projects compete for capital, fewer individual tokens are able to accumulate the scale required to join the billion-dollar group.
