Crypto Market Jumps 11% After CLARITY Act Stalls; Regulatory Burden Eased
The cryptocurrency market has experienced an unexpected surge of 11% since the CLARITY Act stalled in the Senate. The bill, which aimed to provide regulatory clarity for digital assets, failed to advance due to a lack of votes on September 15.
In its absence, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) have seen significant price increases, rising by about 11% and 12%, respectively. Some smaller digital assets have also posted substantial gains, with total crypto market capitalization reaching $2.95 trillion from approximately $2.65 trillion.
Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, attributes the industry's growth to avoiding certain regulatory burdens embedded in the bill. He cites restrictions on stablecoin rewards as a key example, stating that exchanges like Coinbase can continue offering such rewards under the current GENIUS Act framework.
Hougan also highlights the SEC's introduction of an innovation exemption and token buyback guidance following the bill's failure. While this may provide temporary relief, he warns that the current regulatory framework carries risks, particularly with regards to policy direction changing under a future administration.
