Crypto Market Surges as CLARITY Act Fails in Senate
The cryptocurrency market experienced a surge after the failure of the CLARITY Act in the U.S. Senate. According to Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan, the failure of the bill led to regulators intervening with actions that are more aggressively supportive of cryptocurrencies than what the bill proposed. Hougan mentioned the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as key agencies that are favorably intervening in the industry.
Hougan highlighted four areas that benefited from the CLARITY Act's failure: stablecoins, crypto exchanges, tokenization, and yield tokens. For stablecoins, the GENIUS Act remains in effect, prohibiting stablecoin issuers from paying interest income but not restricting exchanges. This allows platforms like Coinbase to offer users rewards for holding stablecoins.
For crypto exchanges, the bill's failure means maintaining the current model, which allows local platforms like Coinbase and Kraken to offer a wide range of financial services. The SEC approved limited trading of tokenized stocks just two days after the CLARITY Act's failure, which places trading platforms and liquidity providers outside the rules developed for traditional platforms. Securitize, which tokenizes funds for BlackRock, Apollo, and KKR, was a major beneficiary of this relief measure.
