Crypto Markets Show Mixed Trends Amid Regulatory and Economic Shifts
Cryptocurrency markets showed a mixed performance on Tuesday morning, with the overall market capitalization inching up slightly. This modest gain comes amid a backdrop of easing bond yields, a weaker dollar, and reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October. Positive regulatory developments also contributed to the improved sentiment, although concerns ahead of the FOMC minutes release and outflows from U.S.-listed crypto spot ETFs tempered some of the optimism.
Sovereign bond yields declined across various tenors and regions, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield dropping 0.85% to 5.268%. The dollar also retreated, as measured by the six-currency Dollar Index, which fell 0.14% to 102.02. The likelihood of a quarter-percentage-point rate hike by the Fed in October decreased to 21.6%, down from 22.1% a day earlier and 50.9% a week earlier.
Regulatory clarity provided additional support to crypto markets. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) sought public comments on proposed rulemaking to regulate crypto asset transactions, aiming to incorporate them into its national market regulatory framework. This move is intended to provide clarity, certainty, and consumer protections in the crypto asset markets. The CFTC’s 60-day public comment window also seeks input on best practices for compliance and how to codify a subcategory of designated contract markets specifically for retail commodity transactions involving crypto assets.
Institutional support for cryptocurrencies also made headlines. Strategy Inc (MSTR) announced the acquisition of 334 Bitcoins worth $28.7 million between October 1 and October 4, bringing its total Bitcoin holdings to 848,000. Overall, the cryptocurrency market capitalization edged up 0.06% overnight to $2.93 trillion, accompanied by a 13% jump in trading volumes. Among the top 100 cryptocurrencies, around 25 saw overnight gains of more than 1%, while around 35 experienced overnight losses of more than 1%.
Bitcoin (BTC) is currently trading 0.14% higher at $86,017.92, about 32% below its all-time high of $126,198. Ethereum (ETH) is trading 0.17% lower at $2,715.47, approximately 45% below its all-time high of $4,953. Other notable movements include Filecoin (FIL), which surged 10.3%, and Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (FET), which declined 6.3%. U.S.-listed crypto spot ETF products saw net outflows of $90 million on Monday, with ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) topping net outflows at $85 million.
