Crypto mining's environmental impact is a complex issue that goes beyond electricity consumption. The consensus mechanism, hardware involved, and source of electricity all play a role.
Proof-of-work networks like Bitcoin rely on energy-intensive hashing to secure consensus, resulting in high greenhouse gas emissions when the electricity mix relies heavily on coal or natural gas. In contrast, proof-of-stake networks like Ethereum have dramatically lower electricity requirements because validators don't compete through large-scale hash computations.
The environmental impact of crypto mining also includes electronic waste, water consumption, air pollution, noise, and waste heat.
