Crypto Money Floods Congressional Elections, Warns Rep. Al Green

Share

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) recently warned about the growing influence of cryptocurrency money in congressional elections and Black politics at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference.

The congressman expressed concern that deep-pocketed interests, particularly from the crypto industry, are entering races that shape Black representation, often with significant financial backing. One notable example cited by Green was his own primary election against Rep. Christian Menefee in Texas' newly drawn 18th Congressional District.

Protect Progress, a crypto-aligned super PAC affiliated with Fairshake, spent over $4 million supporting Menefee during the primary and runoff, according to Federal Election Commission filings. This level of spending is particularly significant when considering that it was largely independent of Menefee's campaign and placed Green's race within a larger deviation in American campaign spending.

Green emphasized that the issue isn't just about one industry or organization but rather what happens when industries accumulate enough financial power to influence the political environment surrounding a congressional race. He also pointed out the role of AIPAC-affiliated United Democracy Project, which has been among the largest outside spenders in House primaries this cycle.
