Crypto Rails Process $73M in AI Agent Payments Over 12 Months
Crypto rails have processed over $73 million in AI agent payments over the past 12 months, according to a new report from Keyrock. The study tracked AI activity on blockchain networks from May 2025 through April 2026 and found that agents settled more than $73 million across roughly 176 million transactions.
The concept behind agentic payments is simple: software agents buy digital services autonomously, without human authorization. Traditional payment rails weren't designed for this kind of activity, but crypto rails have filled the gap, offering lower fees and greater flexibility.
Major firms like Coinbase, Stripe, Google, and Visa are now building competing infrastructure for machine-to-machine payments. For example, Coinbase's x402 protocol allows AI agents to pay directly in $USDC for services such as cloud infrastructure or blockchain analytics.
The market is still small, but forecasts suggest substantial growth ahead. Gartner projects that AI agents could intermediate $15 trillion in purchases by 2028, while McKinsey estimates retail agentic commerce could reach between $3 trillion and $5 trillion by 2030.
