Crypto Regulation Bill Blocked by Senate Democrats Amid Concerns Over Trump Investments
Senate Democrats blocked legislation to create a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, stalling an industry-backed effort to place new guardrails around digital assets.
The bill, which aimed to give crypto firms legal certainty and protect consumers, was met with opposition from Democrats who demanded more limits on President Donald Trump's investments in the sector.
Trump has amassed significant wealth in cryptocurrency since his re-election, including over $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products. The president's family also has a controlling stake in the company.
Republicans needed Democratic support to win the 60 votes necessary to move forward on the bill, but no Democrats supported it. The White House indicated that it would now turn to agencies to implement parts of their crypto agenda.
