Crypto Regulation: Building Trust Through Transparency

Share

The crypto industry has historically viewed regulation as an obstacle to innovation, but a more nuanced approach is needed. Regulation is not trust, it's the architecture that makes trust possible at scale. In small markets, personal relationships can suffice, but with millions of users and complex transactions, institutional trust is necessary. This is where regulation comes in, not to tell people to trust companies, but to make it harder for them to ask for trust without earning it.

According to Bidemi Oke, CEO of FlashChange, regulation should be evaluated through three simple lenses: transparency, responsibility, and consistency. Transparency means that customers should never have to guess how a financial platform works, while responsibility ensures that someone remains answerable when things go wrong. Consistency is also crucial, as businesses struggle with rules that change unpredictably or are enforced inconsistently.

The debate between regulation and innovation is misguided, says Oke. Instead, the focus should be on creating an environment where users can make informed decisions, businesses are held accountable for their claims, and misconduct has real consequences. This is where genuine trust comes from, not from pretending risk doesn't exist, but from making it visible, understandable, and manageable.
