Crypto Regulation Shifts Focus from Anonymity to Transparency

Crypto regulation is changing the way users transfer digital assets as regulators nudge transfers toward traditional payment rules.

The main reason for this shift is the Travel Rule, which requires regulated crypto service providers to collect and share information about senders and recipients of certain digital-asset transfers. The goal is to improve transparency around cross-border transactions and combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

In June 2025, the Financial Action Task Force reported that 99 jurisdictions had passed or were in the process of passing legislation implementing the Travel Rule by June 2025. This expansion aims to standardize information accompanying cross-border payments, giving financial institutions a clearer view of who is sending and receiving funds.

The European Union's Transfer of Funds Regulation has been in effect since December 30, 2024, requiring originator and beneficiary information for qualifying crypto transfers involving regulated service providers. India is also moving in the same direction, classifying virtual digital asset service providers as reporting entities under its anti-money-laundering framework.
