Crypto Stocks Diverge as Senate Fails Digital Asset Clarity Bill
On September 15th, the US Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which would have divided oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
The bill aimed to create federal rules for digital-asset intermediaries but did not secure the necessary 60 votes. Bitcoin fell, while Coinbase dropped around 10%, Circle around 11%, and Strategy Inc around 5%.
Coinbase is a crypto exchange and financial platform that has been expanding into derivatives, stablecoins, and payments. The company's trading market share reached a record in the second quarter, with $20 billion of USD Coin (USDC) held across its products.
Circle's main product is USDC, a digital token designed to stay worth one US dollar. Its key drivers are USDC adoption and interest rates, making it less dependent on crypto trading than Coinbase.
Strategy Inc is mainly a Bitcoin treasury, holding over 843,000 Bitcoins alongside billions of dollars of debt and preferred shares at the end of July. The company's investment case is dominated by its Bitcoin exposure, making regulation more important for demand and price than for the business itself.
