Crypto Super PAC Fairshake Targets 32 House Races with $6 Million Commitment
The cryptocurrency industry’s political arm, Fairshake, is making a significant push to support 32 incumbent U.S. House members ahead of the midterm elections. The super PAC, funded by major players like Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and Andreessen Horowitz, has committed $1 million each to six key lawmakers as part of its $6 million initial investment. The six include influential Republicans like French Hill, Bill Huizenga, and Bryan Steil, along with Democrats Janelle Bynum, Steven Horsford, and Derek Tran.
Fairshake’s endorsements are strategic, targeting lawmakers who supported the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which passed the House but stalled in the Senate. The PAC aims to ensure these pro-crypto incumbents return to Congress to advance future legislation. The broader list of 32 includes leaders like House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar.
The PAC’s financial muscle is substantial, with $122 million in cash as of August. Fairshake and its affiliates spent $71 million across 57 primaries and special elections, winning 53 of those races. The group’s spending model avoids direct contributions, focusing instead on independent expenditures for advertising that emphasize district-specific issues.
Fairshake’s efforts extend beyond the House, including a $30 million campaign against former Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio’s special election. Brown, a vocal crypto critic, is challenging Republican Senator Jon Husted. The industry’s political spending has drawn scrutiny, with watchdog groups noting that crypto-aligned groups have contributed $206 million during the election cycle.
