Cryptocurrency ETFs: A Gateway to Digital Assets
Cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer investors a way to gain exposure to digital assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum without directly buying or holding them. However, not all products called 'cryptocurrency ETFs' have the traditional structure of an ETF.
There are two main types: spot or cash products that hold the underlying cryptocurrency in custody, and futures-based products that invest in derivative contracts on the cryptocurrency. Some products group multiple cryptocurrencies together, while others offer leveraged or inverse exposure, which can be more complex and geared towards short-term strategies.
The main advantage of these instruments is access: investors don't need to manage private keys or use a cryptocurrency exchange platform directly. Custody of the asset, where applicable, is handled by specialized entities.
Cryptocurrency ETFs are traded in various countries, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. However, regulatory, tax, and operational conditions vary depending on each market, and transferring custody to a specialized entity does not eliminate risk, it delegates it.
