Curve Founder Slams Solana's Pump.fun, Igniting Ecosystem Debate
Curve Finance founder Michael Egorov has sparked controversy within the Solana ecosystem after criticizing Pump.fun and Phantom wallet. On August 16, he called Pump.fun a 'casino of scams called memecoins' on X.
Egorov argued that while the Solana Foundation provides strong ecosystem support, the network's flagship applications do not match the quality of the underlying infrastructure. He also claimed that connecting Phantom to a hardware wallet delivered a worse experience than MetaMask, although it eventually worked.
Pump.fun co-founder Tomi204 responded by defending both Pump.fun and Phantom. 'Pump fun just provides a service, people use it however they want, that's the free market,' he said. Egorov later suggested that consumer software tends to degrade in quality once it reaches scale, framing the friction as a growth problem rather than a design flaw.
Pump.fun has generated significant revenue since its launch in January 2024, with cumulative revenue surpassing $1.22 billion. However, quarterly revenue has declined from $294 million in Q1 to $90 million so far in Q3. A federal racketeering suit against Pump.fun's operator, Baton Corporation Ltd, adds to the platform's legal exposure.
