Data Center Stocks Rally with Bitcoin, Yet Lag Behind Evolving Business Models
Data center stocks are surging today alongside Bitcoin's stabilization near recent lows. Cipher Mining's stock jumped 12% to $17.08, while TeraWulf's surged 8% to $15.95 and IREN rose 4% to $41.14. The rally comes without any fresh company announcements from these stocks.
These data center operators began as Bitcoin miners but now trade on an identity they've partly outgrown. Their underlying businesses have evolved toward AI infrastructure, yet their share prices still respond to the price of Bitcoin. This disconnect between the companies' current business and their stock performance is characteristic of the trade.
TeraWulf drew 71% of its $44.8 million Q2 revenue from high-performance computing rather than mining. Its largest commercial commitment is a 20-year Anthropic lease covering 401 megawatts, with initial contracted revenue of roughly $19 billion and extendable to $33 billion. However, this contracted revenue will take years to arrive as cash on the income statement.
The group's short-term direction still follows Bitcoin more than their multi-billion dollar lease backlogs. Investors should be cautious when sizing their positions due to the volatility in exposure to this theme.
