Derive dominates as onchain options market volume doubles in September 2026
September 2026 marked a significant milestone for onchain options trading, with total notional volume nearly doubling in just 30 days. Across various platforms, the volume ranged between $4.8 billion and $5.66 billion, depending on the data snapshot. Derive, formerly known as Lyra Finance, captured the largest share of this market, solidifying its dominant position.
Derive processed approximately $3.8 billion in notional volume for the month, accounting for around 79% of the onchain options market. Its market share was even higher when measured by premiums, reaching about 91-92%. This dominance translated into significant gains for its token, DRV, which hit an all-time high of $0.3857 in mid-September, with a circulating market cap of around $385 million.
Despite Derive's stronghold, competitors like Paradex and Hypercall made notable strides. Paradex's integration with Paradigm's RFQ system in mid-September led to a 285% month-over-month increase in notional volume, pushing its open interest above $250 million. Hypercall, though smaller on the premium side, also posted strong gains, capturing an estimated 11.2% share of notional trading in September.
Derive's success is attributed to its central limit order book (CLOB) architecture, which provides deep liquidity and precise options pricing. Its partnerships, particularly with FalconX, have helped maintain full order books, attracting traders willing to pay premium prices for contracts. As the market continues to grow, the performance of Paradex and Hypercall will be key indicators of whether Derive's lead is softening or if the pie is simply expanding.
