Deutsche Bank's Crypto Custody Service Exclusive to Institutional Clients
Deutsche Bank has announced that it will custody Bitcoin, Ether, and selected stablecoins for its clients. However, this service is exclusively for corporate and institutional clients, leaving retail investors unaffected...for now.
The bank's announcement, dated September 16, 2026, states that the launch of the digital asset custody solution is subject to regulatory procedures under way. This means that even though the service has been announced, it still requires supervisory approval before it can be launched.
For institutional clients, this service makes sense as an asset manager may not be allowed to hold keys themselves for supervisory reasons. However, for retail investors, the question remains whether they should opt for self-custody or rely on a third-party institution like Deutsche Bank.
The bank has partnered with Taurus and is drawing in the technology unit of Bitpanda to provide this service. The safeguards mentioned include hardware-based key protection, approvals by several people, separate environments for warm and cold custody, and controls for backup and recovery.
