Dogecoin: From Joke Coin to Cryptocurrency Mainstay
Dogecoin's history is one of the most unusual in cryptocurrency. It started as a joke, created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer in December 2013.
The coin was built on humor and generosity, with its official website launching soon after its creation. Within days, an active community formed on Reddit, where users sent small amounts of DOGE to reward posts they liked, creating one of the earliest real use cases in crypto.
This tipping culture continued for years, with the community pooling funds to sponsor a NASCAR driver and raise enough DOGE to help send the Jamaican bobsled team to the Winter Olympics. The price of DOGE stayed low, trading for a fraction of a cent, but the community remained loyal and active.
In 2021, Elon Musk's tweets suddenly pushed Dogecoin to an all-time high near $0.73, bringing it into mainstream financial talk. The Dogecoin Foundation was revived with new backers, including Vitalik Buterin and Jared Birchall, bringing structured funding and a technical roadmap.
