Dormant Bitcoin Wallet Awakens with $1.7M Coin Transfer
A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet has awoken after 15.4 years, sending a significant amount of coins to modern addresses. The wallet received its first BTC in February 2011 and took in a total of 429.88 BTC across 43 payments from Braiins Mining, formerly known as Slush Pool.
The coins were sent to various addresses, including Silk Road and Mt. Gox, which was one of the largest exchanges at the time. In October 2011, the wallet sent some coins to an address labeled Silk Road, while others went to a Mt. Gox deposit address.
With Bitcoin's price near $83,000, the 20.43 BTC sent this week is worth around $1.7 million. The wallet's owner appears to have split the coins and merged them with other balances, suggesting they are using current wallet software.
The move comes as Mt. Gox's trustee faces a creditor repayment deadline of October 31, 2026, and still controls about 34,504 BTC after moving 10,422 BTC in June. While this wallet is not directly related to the trustee, any coins with a Mt. Gox tag are getting extra attention right now.
