East Texas A&M University Develops Quantum-Proof Defense for Bitcoin's Lightning Network
A team of researchers from East Texas A&M University has developed a quantum-proof defense for Bitcoin's Lightning Network, called Post-Quantum Lightning Network (PQLN). This implementation is the first working solution that adds quantum-resistant cryptography to the primary layer-2 scaling network.
The PQLN codebase, which consists of nearly 11,000 lines, has been added to a fork of rust-lightning and is already live on GitHub. The researchers used lattice-based algorithms from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology's standardization efforts to secure the system.
The implementation covers five critical areas of Lightning operations: gossip, peer transport, invoices, payment onions, and offers through the BOLT specification framework. PQLN also allows upgraded nodes to communicate with legacy nodes, ensuring interoperability across different configurations.
