ECB Launches Pontes, Bringing Central-Bank Money to Blockchain Markets
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a platform that brings central-bank money onto blockchain-based financial markets. This move is seen as a significant step in the adoption of cryptocurrencies in Europe.
Pontes will allow banks and financial institutions to settle transactions involving tokenized assets using euros held in central-bank money. The ECB has noted that this technology has the potential to make transactions faster and more efficient by bundling multiple steps of an asset's lifecycle and enabling automation.
The platform is not the same as the digital euro, which is a separate project aimed at consumers. Pontes is designed for wholesale financial markets, including banks and eligible financial institutions.
The ECB has warned that widespread stablecoin adoption could weaken commercial banks' retail deposit base. With Pontes, the central bank aims to provide an alternative to stablecoins and tokenized bank deposits.
