Empery Digital Dumps $87M in Bitcoin to Fuel AI Data Center Push
Empery Digital, a US-based corporate treasury firm, has liquidated approximately $87.1 million in Bitcoin to fund its entry into the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure market.
The company sold around 1,400 BTC to acquire an 8% stake in Cardinal Data Power, a private developer of 'powered' data center campuses, as part of its roughly $70 million Series A financing round. The investment will help fund the construction of a massive 750-megawatt data center campus in West Texas, specifically designed for AI and high-performance computing workloads.
Empery's decision to sell off a significant portion of its Bitcoin reserves marks a strategic shift from its previous identity as a Bitcoin treasury company. The liquidation was prompted by pressure from shareholder Tice P. Brown, who called for the company to abandon its digital asset strategy and resign the CEO and board members.
The 'powered' campus model pioneered by Cardinal Data Power integrates power generation, natural gas supply, and electrical infrastructure into a single development plan, aiming to accelerate the delivery of massive computing sites. Empery's pivot into AI infrastructure investments is seen as a bet that the sector will drive near-to-medium term value creation more reliably than financial asset appreciation.
